Nuisance grows like a weed in metro →
Wild marijuana is growing along railroad tracks and roadsides, in abandoned lots and open fields, along fences and beneath stop signs. It’s not primo stuff, authorities say, but it’s more potent than the stuff once referred to as “ditch weed” decades ago. And it grows right here in the metro area. The street value of wild marijuana is minimal compared with that of, say,...

Michael Cole-Smith and Jamil Smith-Cole only meant to share snapshots with friends but a stranger got a hold of their commitment ceremony photos on Michael’s Facebook page — and with the click of a mouse — Michael and his partner Jamil found themselves in a world of controversy. The e-mail and pictures popped up on YouTube and on a variety of blogs. A woman in Atlanta forwarded...

Local man attempts to eat only Chipotle burritos... →
This week Jeremy Baier is facing the kind of challenge that you can never truly prepare for. It will test his strength or character, his motivation, and his digestive system. It has been dubbed the Great American Burrito Challenge: From January 24 through January 30 he will consume three Chipotle burritos each day. That’s 21 total. The caloric intake promises to be astronomical; the...

Vikes Fan Says Sorry For Breaking Picture Window →
Prosecutors say one Vikings fan took his frustration over Sunday night’s loss a little too far after he punched out a window at the bar where he watched the game. Police said 31-year-old Jason Eugene Schorn used his bare hands to smash a big window at Sauce Soundbar in Uptown. Police said he then fled down the street, but a manager and bouncer caught him and brought him back to the bar....

Did Vikings get robbed in championship?  →
The Minnesota Vikings lost the NFC championship game because of turnovers, particularly Brett Favre’s(notes) horrid interception in the waning seconds of regulation. But pragmatism has no place in playing the blame game after your favorite team’s loss. So, to you, Vikings fans, consider the following things you can carp about following the loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Win the bowl, lose the beard 35 years after... →
On a rare occasion, you might find Emmett Pearson of Welch Township not wearing something Vikings. He has two dozen sweatshirts, a dozen hats, a handful of jackets and a pair of gloves, all bearing his favorite team’s logo. Believe it or not, his beard also pays homage to the purple and gold in a miserable sort of way. “I just made up my mind I wasn’t going to shave it until...

Artist hopes a pierogi will rise in Northeast →
Artist Jeff Lohaus chewed on a few ideas before settling on a project that would honor both his northeast Minneapolis neighborhood’s East European heritage and the diversity of its latest immigrants. He came up with this: a majestic, 17-foot pedestal of bronze and brick, placed on the corner of Central and Lowry Avenues and topped by … drumroll, please … a pierogi. As an...

Virginia Teen Expelled for Bringing Knife to... →
This has nothing to do with Minneapolis itself, but click on the above story by KSTP TV of Minneapolis-St. Paul. Take a look at the picture of the Virginia Minnesota High School they used. As someone who collects postcards, I thought to myself when I saw the picture “Gee that looks awfully vintage”. Did you look? Good. Now look at this image...

Police Investigate Cougar Sighting In Minneapolis →
When Norm Mosher was driving home from work Monday morning, he saw what he thought was a golden retriever crossing the road in Northeast Minneapolis near along St. Anthony Parkway near Marshall Avenue. It was only when the long-time outdoorsman got up close that he realized it was a cat by the way it walked. Its long tail was swinging. “Cats move in a more sultry manner I guess, people...

Thank You Andrew!
My faith in humanity was restored today. So this morning I put the girls in the car, and headed out to drop them off at daycare. We had just left the house, and as I was approaching the intersection of 36th and Quail, I gently applied the brakes to slow down for the stop sign on the corner. One problem….we weren’t slowing down, we started skidding towards the intersection. Now this...

Who Owns Lyndale Avenue North? – A Look at Home... →
I’ve been curious about how crime and home ownership relate for a while now but haven’t had a chance to look into it. However, I think I’ve now figured out some ways to crunch some local data, so may be working through some posts on subjects in this realm in the future. Just so we’re clear….The things I post about Minneapolis are lite and fluffy, cute and cuddly. Ed breaks it down to...
