GRAND OPENING - Somali Artifact and Cultural Museum
Saturday October 19, 3:00 – 9:00 pm
1516 E Lake St. Minneapolis, MN 55407
The Somali Artifact and Cultural Museum is Minnesota’s only museum devoted to preserving traditional Somali culture and art. At the Museum’s Grand Opening, the full gallery will be open for viewing, along with Somali snacks and several cultural experts eager to discuss the artifacts. Bring children, bring grandparents, bring your curiosity!
The Somali Museum was founded in response to a need voiced in the Somali community of Minnesota. Minnesota is the home of the largest Somali ethnic population in the United States, with estimates of the size of the population ranging from 35,000 to more than 75,000. Many Somali-Minnesotans are concerned that amidst upheaval, war, and migration, Somalia’s traditional arts are being lost.
The world’s only Somali Cultural History Museum used to be in Mogadishu. In the last 20 years, that museum’s contents have been scattered across East Africa and the world. The Somali Artifact and Cultural Museum seeks to reverse that trend and preserve Somalia’s precious art tradition. In addition, the Somali Artifact and Cultural Museum strives to provide opportunities for members of the diaspora to engage and learn about their tradition.
