What do a bunch of band dudes from the Midwest, who now live in Greenpoint, do when not making music together? Easy: they open a bar. Bobby Drake (The Hold Steady, w/o.), Frank Bevan (w/o.), Rob Pope (Spoon), Eric Odness (The Wanted, Primitive Weapons) named Lake Street after a major thoroughfare in Minneapolis, and they want it to be reminiscent of the bars they used to hang out at back home – “kind of old-man divey but cool bars, you know, where they could be sketchy, but not really,” Drake told Bedford + Bowery during a chat at the nearly finished space at 706 Manhattan Avenue, near Norman.

“We kind of just tried to build the bar we want to hang out in,” said Bevan.

To that end, there will be Midwestern beers (natch), hot dogs, brats, and five TVs. “It’s definitely not a sports bar,” said Bevan, “but we will curate [games] a little bit so that it represents where we’re from.”

The room contains design touches like church pews for seating and a bar top made from an old bowling lane, but Bevan knows he and his partners aren’t reinventing the wheel. “We’re musicians and we’re from the Midwest,” he said. “Are we that different [from other bars]? Slightly because of that, but not wholly. People have done all this shit before.”

With my friends, I always felt a little out of place. I like sports and stuff, but I never quite. … [trails off] Everybody I knew liked to go swimming and fishing and hunting and to football games. I didn’t fit that. I never remember feeling truly comfortable with any of my friends. There was stuff I wanted to tell them that they would laugh at when I tried to explain it. They’d say, ‘Guys don’t talk that way.’ And I was afraid of girls, which is another thing guys aren’t supposed to talk about. So I wrote songs instead.

Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy at Mall of America
http://www.comedycornerunderground.com/

Are you from Minneapolis or why did the area interest you enough to want to write about it. Have you consulted with any producers/directors regarding any movies that have been made in the Twin Cities area?

Whoa, lots of question there, we’ll start with the first one…
#1 I actually collect old Minneapolis “artifacts” (postcards/hotel keys/newspapers/etc) and have done so for almost ten years. I have some items that date back to the mid 1800’s.
#2 I was born and raised in northeast Minneapolis, although I grew up in “Nordeast” when it was the lower middle class, industrial, white trash part of the city, not the cool/hip place that it is now.
#2 (part two) I started this blog to share my old “stuff” about Minneapolis (see what I did there?) and while I still do that, this tumblr has also become a cheerleader for the Twin Cities, which is something our Midwest sensibilities wouldn’t let us do in the past, lest we seem to prideful.
#3 No. I have not contacted any producers/directors regarding movies made in the area.

can you lock a bike on anything like a tree, pole, etc or does it need to be on a bike rack?

This is from the city of Minneapolis website…
In Minneapolis, you can lock your bike to racks and street poles. Do not lock your bike anywhere else (i.e. street lamps, garbage cans, trees, benches, hand railings). If a bike is locked illegally, the City has the right to place a warning on the bicycle for 24 hours and then impound the bicycle.

Wait a minute -- go to the 1938 skyline you posted. Move...

Meet the New Vegas: The 10 Most Sinful Cities in America

Move over, Las Vegas, NV—there’s a new capital of sin in America. Oh, you’re still pretty bad, but it turns out that St. Louis, MO has you beat when it comes to the big seven: Pride, lust, greed, wrath, envy, gluttony, and sloth.

So, in order to make this ranking, we had to translate the sins into some criteria that makes sense for modern city living. That’s how we came up with the seven we ended up using:

Strip clubs per capita (Lust)
Cosmetic surgeons per capita (Pride)
Violent crime per year per 1,000 residents (Wrath)
Theft per year per 1,000 residents (Envy)
Percentage of disposable income given to charity each year (Greed)
Percentage of obese residents (Gluttony)
Percentage of physically inactive residents (Sloth)

We’ve already told you which one claimed the tarnished crown; here’s the full list of the 10 most sinful cities in America:

1. St. Louis, MO
2. Orlando, FL
3. Minneapolis, MN
This city ranked in the top 10 for adult entertainment, aka lust. Something tells us that doesn’t mean karaoke.
4. Pittsburgh, PA
5. Milwaukee, WI
6. Cincinnati, OH
7. Miami, FL
8. Buffalo, NY
9. Detroit, MI
10. Las Vegas, NV

Seriously guys, THE REPLACEMENTS. I’m going to do a shot, cry a little, and get ready for a ridiculous summer.

The Replacements’...

Replacements to reunite in Chicago?

The Replacements’ legendarily calamitous decade-long run ended July 4, 1991, at an unceremonious outdoor gig in Chicago. Could that also be where and how remaining members Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson go about playing their first-ever reunion gig in 2013?

There are currently strong hints of a ‘Mats reunion blowing out of the Windy City centered around Riot Fest, and they’re blowing harder following this cryptic tweet sent out this afternoon — but deleted a couple hours later — via the @RiotFest account:

“holy. [expletive]. We’re getting the band back together. #riotfest”

There are other indicators that make the Chicago rumors more believable, including the fact that — by all accounts — Westerberg and Stinson both had a blast making the “Songs for Slim” tribute EP for former bandmate Slim Dunlap late last year, and it’s still a good/necessary cause for them to promote with a gig. Original drummer Chris Mars also gave a song for the EP but has always talked as if he’s permanently out of the band.

Scheduled Sept. 13-15 in Chicago’s Humboldt Park, Riot Fest has been advertising a mystery slot since its lineup was issued a month ago (“?????” on the posters). Internet and social media chatter predictably pointed to the Replacements, among others. Unpredictably, though, reliable sources are not ruling out the rumors that it’s them.

Why has the Twin Cities become the biggest...

Big In Minnesota

Why has the Twin Cities become the biggest market for Dawes, Brandi Carlile, Eric Hutchinson and JD McPherson?

Outsiders have an impression of the Twin Cities as some kind of magical music mecca.

Wes Kidd, who manages McPherson, the Old 97’s and Minneapolis’ own Soul Asylum, thinks the Twin Cities breaks new artists because the market has “two of the more fiercely independent vehicles for exposure — the Current and First Avenue. They’re entrenched and trusted.”

“You’re freakish in a good way,” said manager Kidd, referring to the likes of Hüsker Dü, Prince, Bob Dylan, Atmosphere and Dessa — and the long winters, too. “There’s a different edge to the town.”

McPherson grew up loving the Replacements, seduced by the photo on the cover of their “Let It Be” album.

“Minneapolis has a strong history of nurturing and producing great bands that aren’t on people’s radar,” he said. “How many cool underground bands came from Minneapolis? I have a romanticized view of the city, like when English bands go to Graceland and Stax Museum when they’re in Memphis. Minneapolis is cool. Minneapolis has cool shops. At First Avenue, you feel the presence of Prince. That’s a huge deal.

“Minneapolis feels like a city where people are into music. They buy records. They have excellent taste. Minneapolis has a singular vibe to it.”
